Friends like Jonathan
1 Samuel 18:1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
Jonathan was the first son of King soul who is expected to be the future king of Israel. He became friend with David after he had killed Goliahat in battle.
Jonathan and David's friendship grew as their souls were knitted together in love which was latter sealed by a covenant. 1 Samuel 18:3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
Jonathan was never envious of David even seeing that he defeated Goliahat which his father couldn't. They were an example of true friendship.
Jonathan gave up his kingship for David believing that God's grace was upon David, despite his father's hatred for David, Jonathan never stop loving him even till death.
David also retreated the love back to the house of Saul after the death of Jonathan his best friend, he sought for anyone who is left in the house of Saul so he can repay the kindness of Jonathan. 2 Samuel 9:1 And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?. He found mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, and He took care of him for the rest of his life.
Jonathan-David's friendship is the kind of friendship the Lord requires from every believer, it is a union of love and trust without self interest or self gain.
The question is, are Jonathan kind of friend to people around you?, do you have the same spirit of love that rest in the life of Jonathan in you? Those who trusted you with their resources and life are regretting it because you failed them, because of you many gave up on God and good people, because you lived an hypocritical life.
As you being David, people have helped you to be who you become today, but are you showing the same kind gesture that was shown to you?, immediately you become great, you cut all ties with those who supported you. That is an evil act before God.
Build the David-Jonathan kind of friendship, reciprocate the same kind gesture shown to you. By this you have the fruit of godliness in you.
Be like Jonathan to everyone, don't be the reason people will stop loving, trusting and caring.
