Conspiracies are always to shame
Nehemiah 4:7 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, 4:8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. 4:9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
Nehemiah 4:15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
In Nehemiah 4, we find the Israelites in the midst of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. They faced opposition from their enemies who sought to thwart their progress and discourage them from accomplishing their task. This was a critical time for the people of Israel, and Nehemiah, their leader, had to confront the conspiracy head-on.
Conspiracies often emerge from a place of wickedness, envy, or fear. They involve secret plans, schemes, or agreements aimed at causing harm or hindering progress. In the case of Nehemiah, the conspirators sought to disrupt the rebuilding of the city walls, not realising the significance of this endeavour for the future of Jerusalem and its people.
The Response to Conspiracies:
1. Vigilance and Awareness: Nehemiah and the people were alert to the schemes of their enemies. They recognized the importance of being aware of the conspiracy and the potential harm it could cause. It is crucial for us to be vigilant in identifying conspiracies that may arise in our lives, communities, or even within our own hearts.
2. Prayer and Trust in God: Nehemiah turned to prayer as a source of strength and guidance. He acknowledged that their success depended on God's favour and protection. When faced with conspiracies, we too must seek God in prayer, trusting in His wisdom, guidance, and protection.
3. Unity and Cooperation: The people of Jerusalem rallied together to confront the conspiracy. Nehemiah organized the people to work together, with one hand on the task and the other hand ready to defend against their enemies. Unity and cooperation are essential when faced with conspiracies. By standing together, we can overcome the divisive tactics of those who seek to shame or harm us.
Consequences of Conspiracies:
Conspiracies ultimately lead to shame for those involved. Nehemiah's response to the conspirators was firm and resolute. He did not allow their plots to deter him or the people from their mission. In verse 15, we read that the conspiracy was frustrated, and the work on the walls of Jerusalem was completed successfully.
Application to Our Lives:
1. Shunning Conspiracies: As followers of Christ, we must reject any involvement in conspiracies that bring harm or shame to others. Instead, we should seek to build up, encourage, and support one another.
2. Guarding Against Conspiracies: Let us be vigilant and discerning, recognizing the signs of potential conspiracies. By staying rooted in God's Word, we gain the wisdom necessary to discern between truth and deceit.
3. Trusting in God's Sovereignty: Just as Nehemiah trusted in God's faithfulness, we must rely on Him in times of adversity. By placing our trust in Him, we can overcome any conspiracy and walk in His divine purpose for our lives.
Finally, conspiracies are always to shame. Let us remember the valuable lessons we have learned from Nehemiah and apply them to our lives.
May we be vigilant, prayerful, and united as we stand against any plot that seeks to undermine truth, justice, and love. Through God's guidance and strength, we can overcome conspiracies and walk in His abundant grace and victory. Amen.
