Wisdom
Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 4:6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
One of the most powerful and transformative gifts that God offers to we humans is wisdom. As believers, we are called to seek wisdom actively, to pursue it as something of great value. This implies that wisdom is not something that comes to us accidentally. Rather, it requires effort, diligence, and a deep desire to know God's will.
In our world that is filled with information and knowledge, it is easy to confuse mere facts with wisdom. But true wisdom is more than knowing facts or having intelligence. Wisdom is the application of knowledge in a way that honors God and benefits others. It is the ability to discern right from wrong and make decisions that reflect God's heart.
Verse 6 of our scripture passage says , *"Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee."* When we cling to wisdom, it becomes a protective force in our lives. The wisdom of God guides us away from the pitfalls of sin, foolishness, and destruction. It helps us navigate the complexities of life with clarity and peace.
Furthermore, verse 7 states, *"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom."* The word "principal" here means the most important or chief thing. Wisdom, in other words, is foundational. It is the bedrock upon which everything else in life is built. Our relationships, our careers, our ministries, and even our faith all thrive when rooted in wisdom.
Let us understand what this means in practical terms. Many of us may seek after wealth, success, or happiness, but the Bible tells us that wisdom should be our primary pursuit. Without wisdom, wealth can be squandered, success can lead to pride, and happiness can be fleeting. But when we prioritize wisdom, all these other things fall into place according to God’s will.
So, in applying this to our life today, First, we need to recognize that true wisdom comes from God. James 1:5 reminds us that "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."
Wisdom is not something we can generate on our own; it is a gift from God. Therefore, we must seek it through prayer, through studying the Scriptures, and through listening to the Holy Spirit.
Second, we must learn to value wisdom above other pursuits. In a world that often prioritizes material success, personal achievement, or social status, we must choose to pursue wisdom as the “principal thing.” This means making decisions based on God’s principles, even when they go against the world's wisdom.
Lastly, we must share the wisdom we receive. Wisdom is not meant to be hoarded; it is meant to be passed on. Just as Solomon passed on wisdom to his son in Proverbs, we are called to share God’s wisdom with those around us—our family, friends, and community.
In conclusion, let us be reminded that wisdom is not merely a collection of sayings or proverbs, but a way of life that aligns us with God’s will. It preserves us, protects us, and guides us through the challenges of life.
God bless you.
