Covenant of wealth in hard times
Deuteronomy 28:12 The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.
When we think of wealth, we often think of jobs, investments, and material possessions. But the true source of wealth is not in these things, it is in the "storehouse of God's blessings." He is the provider, the sustainer, and the One who releases His blessings in the seasons of our lives.
In hard times, it is easy to feel that heaven is closed, that the supply has run dry. But God’s covenant is clear: He promises to open the heavens for His people.
The same God who provided manna in the wilderness is the God who promises to bless us, even in our leanest seasons. This should fill us with confidence and faith, knowing that no matter the state of the economy or our personal circumstances, the storehouse of God is never empty.
Wealth in God’s eyes is not about effortless gain or sudden windfalls; it is about God breathing life into the labor of our hands. Even in hard times, God’s covenant promises that when we work with diligence, integrity, and faith, He will bless the work we do.
Some may feel disheartened in times of economic crisis when jobs are scarce or businesses struggle. But we are reminded that the blessing is not merely in the work itself but in the touch of God upon it. When God blesses your efforts, He multiplies the fruits of your labor, even in seasons where the world sees scarcity.
This is an encouragement to keep pressing on, to remain faithful in whatever God has given you to do. Whether you’re a business owner, a worker, a parent, or a student—God promises to bless the work of your hands. Trust in His ability to bring success even when everything around you suggests failure.
Furthermore, the promise that "you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none" signifies that God’s covenant of wealth is not merely for survival but for abundance. God’s people are called to be a blessing, even in hard times. How can we lend to others when we ourselves are in need? This promise requires a shift in our thinking.
God does not just want to meet your needs, He desires to make you a channel of His blessings to others. In times of crisis, we may be tempted to hold on tightly to what we have, to be self-preserving. But the covenant of wealth challenges us to step into a place of generosity, even in hard times.
God’s wealth is not limited to our bank accounts; it includes the wealth of peace, wisdom, grace, and love. When we are faithful stewards of what we have, no matter how little, God will increase it so that we can bless others.
The context of the covenant is critical: it is a promise given to a people who would face hardship, opposition, and challenges. God’s covenant of wealth is not a prosperity message that ignores suffering or difficulty; rather, it is a declaration that even in the hardest of times, God’s people can walk in His provision and abundance.
It requires faith. Hard times test our trust in God. Do we believe in His promises only when everything is going well, or do we stand firm in our faith when the storm comes? The covenant of wealth in hard times calls us to believe that God is still in control, that He is still opening the heavens, and that He will still bless the work of our hands.
Finally, it’s important to recognize that the covenant of wealth is conditional upon our obedience to God. Earlier in Deuteronomy 28, we see that God’s blessings are connected to listening to His voice and following His commands. We cannot expect the wealth of God’s kingdom if we are not aligned with His purposes. Our faithfulness, integrity, and trust in Him unlock the blessings He has in store for us.
When we live in alignment with God’s Word, we position ourselves under the open heavens, ready to receive His blessings.
God bless you.
