Let no wise man glory in his wisdom

Jeremiah  9:23 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:  9:24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

Our scripture passage today points to three things that often consume our minds: wisdom, might, and riches. These things are not sinful on their own, but when we allow them to become the source of our identity, our pride, and our security, they become idols. God reminds us here that the true value of our lives isn’t found in earthly achievements, intelligence, or possessions, but in our relationship with Him.

We live in a world that exalts intelligence, and for many of us, knowledge has become the pathway to success, power, and self-worth. But wisdom that isn’t rooted in God ultimately leads to a false sense of confidence. Human knowledge is limited; it can’t provide answers to the most important questions about life, morality, and eternity.

As we see in Proverbs 1:7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” This means that only wisdom rooted in God is true wisdom. When we pride ourselves on our own intelligence, we become blind to the reality that all understanding flows from God, the ultimate source of wisdom. Instead, we are invited to humble ourselves and seek God’s wisdom in all things, because His thoughts are higher than ours.

Additionally, God tells the “mighty man” not to glory in his might. This might refer to physical strength, power, or authority. Throughout history, humanity has often relied on strength to establish authority and control. But God makes it clear that human might is fragile. No matter how much power or strength we might possess, there is always something beyond our control.

Furthermore, the third warning is to the “rich man,” instructing him not to glory in his riches. In our society, wealth is often seen as the ultimate sign of success and security. We work hard, save, and invest, hoping to create a life where we lack nothing. But God reminds us that material wealth is temporary; it can be gone in an instant. No amount of money can buy us peace, contentment, or salvation.

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus teaches us, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” True riches are found in Christ. When we seek first the kingdom of God, He provides all we need. Our relationship with Him is the greatest treasure.

Finally, God provides us with an alternative. Instead of glorying in wisdom, strength, or riches, God invites us to glory in this: “that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.” This is our calling — to know and understand God. There is no greater joy, no higher calling, and no deeper satisfaction than growing in our relationship with Him.

To “know” God is more than knowing facts about Him. It is an intimate, life-changing relationship where we experience His love, wisdom, and guidance. When we know Him, we reflect His character, His lovingkindness, His justice, and His righteousness. These are the qualities He delights in, and as we seek to glorify Him, our lives begin to reflect His nature to those around us.

In conclusion, let us therefore, having this understanding, commit to making God the source of our glory. Let us seek to understand and know Him more deeply, then our lives will be a testimony to His lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness.

God bless you.
