Doing all things decently
1 Corinthians 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
Our God is a God of order, not chaos. From the very beginning, we see this in creation. When God created the heavens and the earth, there was a clear sequence to His work. He spoke the world into existence, step by step, day by day, in perfect order. The sun, moon, stars, plants, animals, and finally, humanity, everything was created with precision and purpose.
This reflects God’s nature. He is not careless in His actions. He operates in wisdom and order. If our Creator is a God of order, then as His children, we are called to reflect that same character in our lives. Whether in worship, work, or relationships, we are to approach all things with the mindset of bringing order where there is disorder and peace where there is confusion.
Apostle Paul's instruction in 1 Corinthians 14 is addressing disorder in the worship services of the Corinthian church. Many were eager to use their spiritual gifts, particularly speaking in tongues, but they were doing so in a way that caused confusion rather than edification. Paul reminds them that the purpose of spiritual gifts is to build up the body of Christ, not to draw attention to oneself.
In our worship today, we must be mindful that every egg thing we do in the church should point to Christ and build up His people. Whether it’s how we preach, sing, or serve, our worship should be thoughtful and reverent.
This doesn’t mean that worship can’t be vibrant or passionate, but there should always be a sense of purpose and respect for the presence of God.
The instruction given, to do things "decently and in order" doesn’t apply only to the church; it applies to every area of our lives. Often, our personal lives can fall into disorder, our time is scattered, our priorities are misaligned, and we struggle to maintain balance. But God desires that we live disciplined, intentional lives that reflect His order.
Scripture tells us that we should “redeem the time” (Ephesians 5:16). This means being wise stewards of our time, resources, and opportunities. Whether it's managing our household, handling finances, or caring for our relationships, God calls us to be orderly in all things. This brings glory to Him and allows us to live with greater peace and purpose.
Finally, doing things decently and in order also applies to how we relate to one another. As the body of Christ, we are called to live in harmony.
This means resolving conflicts with love, handling disagreements with grace, and serving one another with humility. Disorder in relationships leads to division, but order, grounded in love and mutual respect, brings unity and peace.
In our homes, workplaces, and churches, we are to reflect the peace of God by living in a way that fosters healthy, life-giving relationships. Paul reminds us in Romans 12:18, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Peace comes when we align our lives with God’s principles of order.
In conclusion, doing things “decently and in order” is more than just a call for structure; it is a reflection of God’s nature and a path to living a life that honors Him. When we strive for order in our worship, our daily lives, and our relationships, we create an environment where God’s Spirit can move freely and powerfully.
God bless you.
