Don't forget God's law
Proverbs 3:1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: 3:2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. 3:3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
The passage above comes from the wisdom of King Solomon, a man who asked God for wisdom above all else. And from that divine wisdom, he offers us these words of guidance.
King Solomon starts with a plea, "Do not forget." The implication here is clear, forgetting God's law is dangerous. In the busyness of life, we can easily drift away from the core principles that God has given us. When life gets hard, or when distractions pull at us, it's easy to push aside the Word of God.
But we are called to be diligent in remembering. This means more than just reading the Word occasionally or hearing it on Sundays. It means making it an integral part of our daily lives. It means meditating on Scripture, reminding ourselves of God’s promises, and actively applying His commands in our decisions, relationships, and behaviors.
Remembering God’s law anchors us. It provides direction when the world tries to confuse us, stability when the world is unstable, and peace when chaos surrounds us.
Furthermore, we must keep the commandment of God in our heart, It is not enough just to know God's commands intellectually. We must go further by storing them deep within our hearts. When we internalize God's Word, it becomes part of who we are, it shapes our thoughts, desires, and actions.
But, why the heart? The heart, in biblical terms, is the seat of emotions, thoughts, and will. If God’s commands are written on the heart, they will influence every part of our lives. They will guide how we treat others, how we speak, and how we live in alignment with God’s will. Keeping His Word in our hearts means that in moments of decision or temptation, His truth will rise up to guide us.
When God’s commands are kept in our hearts, they will also guard us from the temptation to sin. Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." Hiding His Word in our hearts is a protective measure—it’s spiritual armor.
Finally, King Solomon encourages us to live in love and faithfulness. When we embrace God’s law, we are called to exhibit His character—especially in our relationships. Love and faithfulness are central to God’s nature, and they must be central to ours as well.
In conclusion, We are to "bind God's laws around our neck" a visible reminder of who we are in Christ. This means that our lives should radiate love and faithfulness so clearly that others see it in our actions and hear it in our words.
God bless you.
