The words of the wise

Ecclesiastes  12:11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

A goad is a sharp instrument used by a shepherd to prod animals in the right direction. It may cause discomfort, but its purpose is not harm but to guide. Similarly, the words of the wise may sometimes challenge us or feel uncomfortable, but they are meant to push us toward a better path.

Let us consider how often we resist correction or refuse to listen to advice. Yet, the Bible reminds us that wisdom or godly wisdom often comes in the form of uncomfortable truths.

We might prefer to stay in our comfort zones, but wisdom prods us forward, reminding us that the path of righteousness may not always be easy, but it leads to life. Proverbs 3:11-12 reminds us, "My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves."

As followers of Christ, we must learn to embrace the goads of wisdom. Let them push us toward integrity, holiness, and obedience to God. Whether through the counsel of the wise, the conviction of the Holy Spirit, or the lessons of Scripture, God’s wisdom is directing us, even when we may not realize it.

Next, the verse compares the words of the wise to "firmly embedded nails." While the goads guide, the nails secure. Nails hold things in place, providing stability and strength. The wisdom of God, when embraced and applied, acts like these nails, it anchors us in truth.

In a world that seems to be constantly shifting, where opinions and values change like the wind, we need the steadying presence of wisdom to keep us grounded. It is wisdom that anchors us in the storm, reminding us of God's unchanging truth when everything around us feels uncertain.

Jesus spoke of this kind of wisdom in Matthew 7:24-25, when He said, "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock."

Let the words of the wise, God's wisdom, become those embedded nails in your life. Let them secure your faith, stabilize your convictions, and fortify your heart against the trials and temptations of this world. Wisdom doesn’t just guide us; it strengthens us for the journey ahead.

In conclusion, the words of the wise are more than good advice, they are life-giving tools that God uses to shape us, guide us, and secure us. They are like goads, pushing us toward righteousness, even when we are reluctant. They are like nails, securing us in a foundation that cannot be shaken. And they are gifts from our loving Shepherd, who knows exactly what we need for the journey.

Let us, seek out and treasure the wisdom of God. Let us welcome His correction, embrace His stability, and follow the voice of our Shepherd, knowing that He leads us to life, peace, and joy.

God bless you.
