A merry heart and a broken spirit
Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
A merry heart is a heart that is full of joy, gladness, and laughter. It is a heart that is not weighed down by the cares and worries of this world. A merry heart is like medicine to the soul. It brings healing and refreshment to our spirits.
On the other hand, a broken spirit is a heart that is sad, downcast, and discouraged. It is a heart that has been wounded by the challenges and difficulties of life. A broken spirit dries up the bones, meaning it drains the life out of us, leaving us feeling tired, weary, and hopeless.
As Christians, we are not immune to the challenges and difficulties of life. In fact, Jesus told us that in this world, we will have trouble. But He also said that we should take heart because He has overcome the world (John 16:33).
So, how do we cultivate a merry heart in the midst of life's challenges? The answer is found in our relationship with God. When we trust in God and His promises, when we seek Him in prayer and worship, when we meditate on His Word, our hearts become filled with joy and gladness.
Psalm 16:11 says, "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore." When we abide in God's presence, we experience the fullness of joy that He offers.
But what about when we have a broken spirit? How do we find healing and restoration? The answer is also found in our relationship with God. Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." When we bring our brokenness to God, when we pour out our hearts to Him, He is faithful to heal and restore us.
So, let us strive to cultivate a merry heart, a heart that is filled with the joy and gladness of God's presence. And let us also remember that when our spirits are broken, we can find healing and restoration in Him.
May we always remember the words of King Solomon in Proverbs 17:22: "A merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones." Let us seek to have a merry heart in all circumstances, and let us turn to God for healing and restoration when our spirits are broken.
God bless you.
