God Himself is the light

1 John  1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Light in the biblical context often symbolizes purity, holiness, and truth. It represents the illuminating presence of God that dispels darkness, ignorance, and sin.

Light is pure and undefiled. Similarly, God’s nature is utterly holy. He is without blemish, without sin. In Isaiah 6:3, the seraphim proclaim, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." This holiness sets God apart and calls us to a life of holiness as well.

Light reveals what is hidden in the darkness. God's light exposes the truth, revealing His will and His ways to us. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Through His word and Spirit, God enlightens our hearts and minds, guiding us in righteousness.

The latter part of the verse emphasizes that in God, there is no darkness at all. This understanding reveals several critical aspects of God's character:

1. Absence of Sin:
Darkness symbolizes sin and evil. In God, there is no sin, no evil, no deceit. He is completely righteous and just. James 1:17 tells us that "every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

2. Consistency and Faithfulness:
God's nature is unchanging. Unlike the shifting shadows, He remains constant. His promises are sure, His love steadfast, His presence enduring. This reliability offers us a secure foundation upon which to build our faith and lives.

Implications for our lives today

1. Walking in the Light:
In 1 John 1:7, we are called to "walk in the light, as he is in the light." This means living lives of transparency, integrity, and holiness. It involves rejecting sin and embracing the truth. It calls us to be reflections of God’s light in a dark world, shining forth His love and truth.

2. Fellowship with One Another:
Walking in the light brings us into fellowship with one another. The light of God fosters unity, breaking down barriers of sin and division. It allows us to experience genuine community, rooted in the love and grace of Christ.

3. Spreading the Light:
As recipients of God’s light, we are also called to be bearers of that light. Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14-16, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden... let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." We are called to illuminate the world around us, sharing the hope and truth of the Gospel.

In conclusion, Let us strive to live in holiness, embrace the truth, and shine forth His light in all we do. In a world often overshadowed by darkness, may we be beacons of hope and vessels of God’s radiant light.
