Having a good conscience
1 Peter 3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 3:17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
A conscience is that inner sense of right and wrong that guides our actions and decisions. It is our moral compass, given by God to help us discern good from evil. However, for our conscience to be reliable, it must be informed and shaped by the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.
Peter exhorts us to maintain good behavior in Christ. This means living lives that reflect the love, truth, and righteousness of our Savior. Our actions should be a testimony to the transformation Christ has wrought in our lives. When we walk in obedience to God's commands, our conscience is clear because we know we are living in a way that pleases Him.
As Christians, we will inevitably face opposition, including slander and false accusations. Peter’s audience, early Christians, knew this reality all too well. He encourages them, and us, to respond not with retaliation but with steadfastness in doing good. A good conscience means we can stand firm, knowing our actions are blameless before God.
When our conscience is clear, we possess a unique power and peace. We are not weighed down by guilt or doubt. This clarity enables us to respond to our accusers with gentleness and respect, knowing that God is our ultimate judge. Moreover, a clear conscience has a convicting power. Those who slander us may feel ashamed when confronted with our unwavering integrity and goodness.
How do we maintain a good conscience? It begins with daily communion with God through prayer and Bible study. We must be diligent in confessing our sins and seeking His forgiveness. Furthermore, we need to be intentional about living out our faith in practical ways—showing love, kindness, and honesty in all our dealings.
In conclusion, we must know that our good behavior in Christ serves as a powerful testimony to the world. Let us, therefore, strive to keep our conscience clear, trusting that God will use our faithfulness to bring glory to His name and perhaps even bring our accusers to repentance.
God bless you.
