Be an example
1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Timothy was a young leader in the early church, and it’s likely that his age was a point of contention for some. Apostle Paul knew that youth often comes with a lack of experience, and society may look down on younger individuals. Yet, he urges Timothy and all of us not to let this be a barrier.
Age should never define our capacity to lead, inspire, or live out our faith. God calls each one of us, irrespective of our age, to be vessels of His love and truth. The real measure of our influence lies in our conduct and character as a believer, not in the number of our years. Therefore we are challenged to be an example of a true believer in Christ.
1. Be an Example in Word
The first area we need to be an example is our speech. Our words hold immense power, they can build up or tear down, bless or curse, encourage or discourage. As Christians, we are called to use our words to reflect Christ’s love and truth.
James 3:10 reminds us, "Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be." Let us be mindful of our speech, ensuring it is always seasoned with grace, truth, and love. By doing so, we become living testimonies of the Gospel.
2.. Be an Example in Conduct:
Our actions speak louder than our words. How we behave in our daily lives can either draw people closer to Christ or push them away. Paul urges us to be exemplary in our conduct, living lives that are above reproach.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Every action, whether big or small, should reflect the love and integrity of Christ.
3. Be an Example in Love:
Love is the hallmark of a true Christian. Jesus commanded us to love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34). This love is not just an emotion but a deliberate choice to put others before ourselves.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 beautifully describes this love: patient, kind, not envious or boastful, not proud or rude. This selfless, sacrificial love sets us apart and shows the world that we are followers of Christ.
4. Be an Example in Spirit:
Being an example in spirit involves our inner attitude and motivation. It is about having a spirit of humility, kindness, and compassion. It’s about being fervent in our walk with God, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide and shape us.
Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. As we yield to the Spirit, these qualities become evident in our lives, influencing those around us.
5. Be an Example in Faith:
Faith is our foundation. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Our faith should be evident not only in our words but also in our unwavering trust in God, even in the face of trials.
By standing firm in our faith, we provide a powerful testimony to others. We show that our hope is not in the temporary things of this world but in the eternal promises of God.
6. Be an Example in Purity:
Purity encompasses our thoughts, actions, and intentions. It’s about living a life that is holy and set apart for God. In a world that often celebrates moral compromise, maintaining purity is a powerful witness.
Matthew 5:8 says, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." Let us strive to keep our hearts and minds pure, resisting the temptations that can lead us astray.
In conclusion, as Timothy was challenged by apostle paul, so also we are challenged today. We are called to be examples in word, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity. This is not an easy task, but with God’s help and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, it is possible. Let us commit today to live out this high calling, to be beacons of light in a world that so desperately needs it.
God bless you.
