Forgiveness

Matthew  18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

Jesus teaches us to approach those who have wronged us with a spirit of reconciliation. This approach prevents the festering of resentment and the escalation of disputes. It is not about accusing or condemning but about seeking restoration and understanding.

When we go to our brother or sister, we are called to do so with humility and love, reflecting the grace that God extends to us. This act of reaching out can be challenging, as it requires vulnerability and courage. However, it is essential for maintaining the unity and purity of the body of Christ.

Forgiveness as a Prerequisite for Prayer

Mark 11:25 tells us: "And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

In this passage, Jesus links our forgiveness of others to God's forgiveness of us. Our relationship with God is deeply connected  with our relationships with others. Holding onto grudges and bitterness hinders our spiritual growth and our prayers. Jesus urges us to release these burdens and extend forgiveness, just as God generously forgives our transgressions.

Forgiveness is not merely a suggestion; it is a command. It is a reflection of our understanding and acceptance of God's grace. When we forgive, we imitate Christ and open our hearts to receive God's blessings and peace.

Forgiveness is a powerful act that frees both the forgiver and the forgiven. It breaks the chains of anger, bitterness, and resentment, allowing healing and reconciliation to take place. However, forgiveness is not always easy. It often involves deep emotional work and a conscious decision to let go of the desire for revenge.

We must remember that forgiveness does not mean condoning wrongdoing or forgetting the harm done. Instead, it is about releasing ourselves from the grip of negative emotions and trusting God to bring justice and healing. It is a testament to our faith in God's ultimate plan and justice.

Practical Steps Toward Forgiveness

1. Prayer: Start by praying for the strength to forgive and for the person who has wronged you. Ask God to soften your heart and give you the wisdom to approach the situation with love.

2. Reflection: Reflect on God's forgiveness in your own life. Remember the times when you have received mercy and grace, and let that inspire you to extend the same to others.

3. Communication:  If possible, follow the guidance of Matthew 18:15. Approach the person privately and discuss the issue. Seek to understand their perspective and express your feelings honestly and kindly.

4. Release:  Let go of the desire for revenge. Trust that God will handle justice. Focus on your own healing and well-being, allowing God to work in your heart.

5. Repeat:. Forgiveness is often a process. You may need to forgive multiple times before you truly feel free. Keep seeking God's help and reminding yourself of His infinite grace.

In conclusion, Let us strive to be peacemakers, addressing conflicts with love and extending forgiveness generously. In doing so, we will experience the freedom and joy that come from living in harmony with God's will.

God bless you.
