Watch and Pray
Matthew 26:40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 26:43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 26:44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
No greater advice could be given to someone who finds himself in a precarious situation as the disciples other than to watch and pray. Christ who knew what was about to happen charged the disciples on the need to keep watch and pray.
The call to "watch" signifies an alertness to the world around us. In our fast-paced lives, it is easy to become entangled in the distractions of this world, losing sight of our spiritual journey.
Watching entails being aware of the choices we make, the company we keep, and the influences that surround us. It is a call to examine our hearts and minds, ensuring they align with the teachings of Christ.
Jesus urges us to "pray." Prayer is the lifeline that connects us to God. Through prayer, we seek strength, guidance, and forgiveness. It is in our moments of communion with God that we find the fortitude to resist temptation and overcome the weaknesses of our human nature. Prayer transforms our spirit, aligning it with the will of God and empowering us to navigate the challenges of life.
The acknowledgment that "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" emphasizes the internal struggle we all face. Our sincere intentions may be pure, but the frailty of our human nature makes us susceptible to stumbling. This recognition should not lead to despair but rather intensify our commitment to watch and pray. In our weakness, God's strength is revealed.
As we mediate in this, let us cultivate a lifestyle of watchfulness and prayer. Let our lives be marked by a conscious awareness of the choices we make and a continuous dialogue with our Creator. In doing so, we fortify our spiritual foundation, creating a resilient defense against the temptations that seek to ensnare us.
In conclusion, in all we do, let us be watchful and pray along, the devil put adversary never sleep nor slumber seeking whom to devour.
God bless you.
