Wisdom and Understanding

Job  28:28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

The starting point of true wisdom is the "fear of the Lord." However, this "fear" is not a trembling or terror but a deep reverence and awe for our Creator.

It is acknowledging God's sovereignty, holiness, and unmatched wisdom. The fear of the Lord is an attitude of humility that recognizes our dependence on Him and our desire to align our lives with His divine will.

As we seek wisdom, we must humbly acknowledge that we don't have all the answers. Wisdom begins with the recognition of our limitations as human beings and our need for divine guidance.

In Proverbs 1:7, we are reminded that "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge," highlighting the inseparable connection between wisdom and the fear of God.

The fear of the Lord leads to wisdom in our decision-making. When we approach God with reverence, seeking His guidance in every aspect of our lives, He promises to grant us wisdom (James 1:5). This divine wisdom helps us navigate the complexities of life and make choices that align with God's plan for us.

The second part of Job 28:28 reveals that understanding comes from "shunning evil." Understanding goes beyond knowledge; it involves discernment, insight, and the ability to apply knowledge wisely.

A. Discerning Right from Wrong

Understanding begins with recognizing the difference between good and evil. By aligning our lives with God's moral principles, we gain insight into what is right and just. Proverbs 9:10 reminds us, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

B. Embracing Godly Living

To understand God's ways, we must embrace a lifestyle that shuns evil. This means actively turning away from sin and pursuing righteousness. Through the transformation of our hearts and minds, we become more attuned to God's purposes and His will for our lives.

The fear of the Lord and shunning evil are not different entities rather, they are intricately connected. It is through the fear of the Lord that we gain access to true wisdom, and through understanding, we are empowered to live out that wisdom.

As we walk in the fear of the Lord and shun evil, we begin to fulfill our God-given purpose. Our lives are transformed, and we become agents of God's wisdom and love in the world. Proverbs 3:7-8 says, "Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones."

When wisdom and understanding flow from our lives, we become a powerful witness to the world around us. Our actions, decisions, and attitudes reflect the glory of God, drawing others to seek the source of our wisdom.

Conclusion:

As we cultivate wisdom and understanding, we will grow in our relationship with God, experience the joy of living according to His purpose, and become a shining light in this dark world. Let us embark on this journey of seeking wisdom and understanding, knowing that the treasure we find will transform our lives and glorify our Heavenly Father. Amen.
